Infrastructure

Procedure

The main raw material used for iron making is iron ore. There are two main types of iron ore minerals hematite, which is named after its blood red colour and magnetite, which is called so because it is a form of natural magnet. Iron is produced when the ore is heated with coke and limestone in a blast furnace. The coke acts both as fuel and as a chemical agent to remove oxygen from the ore, leaving the metal. The limestone absorbs impurities present in the ore and forms a layer called slag. Finally, the pure iron is extracted from its ore.
